Corruption -- A Huge Monster

Since last 2 years corruption in India has crossed all limits. Right from the Commonwealth games scam upto the recent Gadkari expose , there have been a large number of predictable and unpredictable people involved in corruption in public and private undertakings.

Earlier in 2010, before the Commonwealth Games took place in New Delhi, a huge scam rocked the capital in which a Union Minister Mr Suresh Kalmadi was directly involved. A large number of abnormal favours where found to be done by him in the allotment of different tasks ( for the completion of the commonwealth games site )   to quite a number of private parties. There were evidences of buying a large number of items at astronomical prices from favoured contractors and it is believed that Kalmadi and his cronies ate up crores of Government fund allotted towards the CW Games. He was first arrested in 2011 and then released on bail this year with no sufficient grounds to prove him as Prime accused !! During the last month he was inducted into one of the standing committees in the government once again !!!!

Then came the 2G Scam, the biggest scam till then in history. Mr A Raja, the Union Telecom minister was accused to validate licenses to a large number of private communications companies at negligible rates for conducting 2G mobile operations in India. This caused the Government exchequer a loss amounting to Rs 176,000 crores !!! Mr Raja was arrested , kept in jail for sometime and then released under bail , exactly in the same fashion as was Kalmadi, under the pretext that there werent enough evidences found against him too !! He also is inducted in one of the standing committees of the government again !!!! Limit of shamelessness and misappropriation on the part of the congress government !!!!

Then came the turn of Kanimozhi , the daughter of the DMK chief Karunanidhi. She was found to be involved in a corruption case of her south based TV Channel and arrested. After a small period of time she too got a bail and then released with the same grounds of insufficient evidences against her.

Adarsh Society scam, involving the then Maharashtra Chief Minister Mr Ashok Chavan proved that corruption wasn't just limited to the centre but the state-level politicians were equally corrupt. Although the CM had to resign but as of now, no stern action has been taken against the dismissed CM.

After that there was this Illegal Mining scam in Karnataka which showed that Mr Yedyurappa, the then CM of Karnataka state, was also involved in it.  He was accused of favouring the Reddy brothers, who were the prime accused. Mr B.S.Yedyurappa, the ex-chiefminister of the state, is from BJP, which meant that the congress party was not alone in the mud of corruption.

Breaking the record of 2G Scam, in came the infamous "Coal-Gate Scam". A large number of corporates including Tata Steel, were being offered large amount of coal from the government-owned mines and the coal minister Shriprakash Jaiswal as well the Prime Minister Mr Manmohan singh, himself this time, were named as the accused and responsible for a loss of 185,000 crore to the Government !!! The BJP protested during the entire monsoon session of the parliament, boycotting the two houses but to no avail. The government neither concede to its demands of a detailed probe into the matter nor did anyone resign, taking any moral responsibility. On the contrary, the govt accused the BJP of obstructing the normal functioning of the parliament and hence causing financial damage to the nation !! Within two months as of now, its almost a forgotten matter from the minds of the public !! ( ironically and correctly stated sometimes to be suffering from Amnesia !!)

My question to the readers of this blog is , why is the congress Government not taking any preventive and severe action against such financial criminals and instead of punishing them ,why is it  releasing them from jail and inducting them again into the political mainstream ?? Everyone knows how much the above three were guilty of wrongdoings in public life . If the Congress cannot punish them then the people of India will punish the Congress party in the next general elections of 2014. Right from Independance of India , in the last 65 years, corruption has reached these levels in this country. The congress party has failed the people of this country in its second innings after 2009.

In September the Irrigation scam in Maharashtra was revealed by Ajit Pawar, when he resigned from the Maharashtra state assembly cabinet and accused of a large scale corruption done by NCP leaders like Sharad Pawar. According to a news channel, 32 projects were hurriedly cleared off VIDC ( Vidharbha Irrigation Development Corporation ) in a very small span of 3 months between June and August 2009. First they were approved with smaller budgets but then revised approval was done with an increase in the amount for the projects by as much as 300 % !! When approached the concerned beaurocrats replied that the rise in project cost was due to increase in the rates quoted by the contractors, rise in prices of goods needed, etc. How can the prices rise by 300 percent in 3 months ? Around 70,000 crores were allotted for the rise in irrigation standards in Maharashtra state but according to an Economic survey observation only 0.1 percent increase in irrigation facilities has been reported in the last one decade inspite of allotment of such large funds. It is believed that this scam may amount to Rs 35000 crores due to the nexus between the political bosses of congress,NCP and BJP and the contractors appointed by the irrigation department of Maharashtra Government . A series of allegations have been made on each other by Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar on each other. Its nothing else but one more dark chapter in the recent corruption-exposes done by the media and the RTI activists.
Sharad Pawar has been accused of corruption charges even when he was agriculture minister in the central government in the first term of the UPA
government and a large amount of grain got decayed due to recklessness of the government .Also when sugar prices went up sharply in 2006 no decisive action was taken by the congress party to remove this ally from the ministry. What a shame he has been for this country !

Mr P.Chidambaram is believed to have given the nod for all the 2G License approvals done by the then Union Telecom Minister Mr A Raja, since Chidambaram was the finance minister of the country at that time. Hence he also should be considered as a co-accused in the 2G Spectrum Scam alongwith the already tainted minister A Raja. Whenever Mr Chidambaram is surrounded by the reporters and asked about his alleged state of being informed ( if not direct involvement ) in it, he categorically denies all the charges levelled against him but the manner in which he quickly becomes uncomfortable and his depressed body language clearly show that he is hiding something substantial and doesn't want to reveal it to the indian public. What should be done to make him open his mouth ? Any suggestions ? Yes, this is a democracy and every Indian has a right to remain silent whenever he wishes to. But when someone is directly pointing a finger at your character, about which you have been boasting since so many years, it becomes your duty to come out with hard evidences and facts to disapprove all the charges levelled against you. Else there is a huge chance that you will lose your credibility amongst the masses. Mr Chidambaram thinks himself to be amongst the most intelligent human-beings of India ( from the compressed manner in which he speaks his english words ) but he should remember that this is a democracy and the public shouldn't be under-estimated to be foolish or less smarter than one's own self.

Robert Vadra's capital went up by 600 percent in a matter of 2 years, according to an expose done by a TV Channel. According to the channel, DLF Ltd, a private sector listed construction giant, sold large amount of land to Vadra at throwaway prices and then Vadra sold them back the same land ( and also to others ) at exorbitant rates. The Capital of Vadra's company went up by a whopping 600 percent in a space of 23 months. The Haryana Chief Minister Mr Bhupindersingh Hooda facilitated the transactions of land deals between DLF and Robert Vadra, initially at very low rates compared to market prices, in order that Mr Vadra, who as we all know is the son-in-law of the congress party President Mrs Sonia Gandhi, gets massive profits from these transactions when he comes out to sell the same land. It is an open and shut case of corruption done by Mr Vadra, the Haryana government as well as DLF Ltd, transgressing the laws of property buying and selling. When an IAS officer, Mr Ashok Khemka, tried to investigate in this matter, he was immediately transferred to a very unimportant place, showing how powerful the political lobby is, in this country. As on today, the Vadra corruption case, is nothing more than yet another scandal in the long list of recent corruption scams in India. We all know that it also will be soon a forgotten story !

Mr Salman Khurshid, the Law minister of India, came into the headlines then. He was accussed by the India Today Group ( which has its own Headlines Today TV Channel in India ) of widespread misappropriation of charity funds collected in a Trust with the name of his maternal Grandfather Mr Zakir Hussain, who happens to be an Ex-President of India. The funds amounting to 71 lacs ( 7.1 million ) Rupees, were used to purchase supportive equipments like wheel-chairs etc used by handicapped people, according to the Zakir Hussain Trust. However on investigation , it was found by the India Today Group, that so many people who were in the list of the beneficiaries actually didn't get anything and some people who were dead in 2009 , were included in the list as beneficiaries !! Some people who were deaf, had been shown in the list as recepients of wheel-chairs !! When questioned by the press , during a press conference , Salmaan Khurshid became furious and threatened Mr Deepak Sharma, ( Editor , AajTak Channel ) of suing him in a court of law instead of answering the questions satisfactorily !! The hype around this case continued for a few days but then later on it got subsided down like rest of the corruption cases. As on today, Mr Khurshid has been promoted to the post of Foreign Minister of India ( Cabinet rank ), as a gesture of patting his back for the courage he showed by misappropriating the charity funds for his own personal use and then totally insulting the democratic framework of this country by threatening the journalists of suing them, when they were just doing their modest duty.

Its being said ( according to a Press release ) that the total amount spent behind the medical treatment of Mrs Sonia Gandhi, President of Congress Party, is an astronomical figure of Rs. 1880 crores ( 18800 millions ) during the last 3 years !!! What on earth could they have done during this treatment ? Even if you count all the foreign tours in Executive class flights to far-off destinations like the US, medical treatment bills for the entire 3 years, it wouldn't come more than Rs 10 or 15 crores ( with the best treatment possible on earth ). And see this figure -- 1880 crores, a 100 times bigger amount !! There is no logic behind this and its a totally unscrupulous amount. Investigations need to be done behind this as to how many people went to the US with Soniaji, when she went for treatment and how many of them were not necessary at all. The leaders just can't use public money in this manner. No way .

Whilst talking about so many corruption cases of the Congress leaders, we shouldn't forget the exploits of a non-congress leader, Mr Nitin Gadkari ( BJP National President ). His company Purti Sugars is involved in a land scam in Maharashtra state and his name is also taken in the Irrigation scam involving Sharad Pawar. Acres and acres of land have been illegally purchased and sold by Nitin Gadkari and his cronies and they have earned millions from it in the last 10 years. When interrogated by the journalists, he avoided all the questions and also neglected to receive phone calls which can cause discomfort to him ! Equally shameless as the congress politicians, the BJP leaders showed full faith in Gadkari and denied all the charges of corruption and misappropriation levelled by Kejriwal and the media against him !! As on today, nothing substantial has been done in this case too, and there has been no big inquiry set up so far in this case, showing the underground alliance between the congress and the BJP, when it comes to mis-utilization of public funds. Kejriwal went to the extent of saying that although the congress and BJP appear as rivals in public, internally within themselves they are very good friends and allies when it comes to hiding each others' wrong doings ! This is the True face of the politicians in our country. They care for no one except their personal pride and property. Only when the elections draw near they start being modest and polite in public, otherwise they just don't care about the common man.

Inshort the demon of corruption has swelled to a very large extent in India during the last 4 to 5 years. Especially since 2009, when the Congress Party regained power , it has eaten away crores and crores of public money in the form of corruption and bribery. The total amount of all the scams of corruption and misappropriation of funds, discussed above, comes to a whopping 4.5 lac crore ( 4,500,000 millions or 4500 billion rupees ) !!!! The extent of damage caused to Public money and people's faith in politicians is incredibly humungous. What needs to be done to repair it ? -- the answer to this question needs deep introspection, urgent change in the Constitution of India and decisive firm action against all the culprits. Else they will further keep on eating away into the wealth of this great nation like termites eating upon a piece of wood.

As responsible citizens of this country, all of us should unite to fight corruption in every possible manner and also try our best to find solutions to prevent the growth of it. One must not forget that every problem has its own solutions and every night is followed by a Fresh Bright day.
